It is used to transfer physical data files from one system to another (This is called Uploading and Downloading). Explained : You have created a web page (.html file) at home on your computer. You would now like to put this file in your account on Alpha1 so that the web server can use it when people are viewing your web pages. How would you accomplish this without doing a telnet to the system and re-typing in all of your data bit-by-bit? FTP. FTP allows you to send a file, or files, from one destination to another. Program Location : All versions of Windows, versions 95 and up, have FTP built into them. In some cases, MAC's do not come equipped with this program, and it must be acquired. On a Windows 95/98/NT/2000 system, simply hit START then RUN and type in "ftp alpha1.net".
Advanced Tips : You can find arious versions of FTP programs in our Free Files area of http://www.alpha1.net. We *highly*
recommend WS/FTP.
TELNET Explained : You are at a remote location, somewhere across the internet at a computer, connected to the internet. Our system, in which you have an account, is located far away in San Antonio, Texas (USA), and also attached to the internet (permanently). You need to log into our system, and use your account, but you can't possibly reach the monitor and keyboard attached to our server. This is what telnet is for. Our systems allow a TELNET connection, which is extremely commonplace on the internet. What the telnet program/protocol does, is allow you to run a program on your computer, and remotely attach to the Alpha1server as if you were actually sitting in front of it - keyboard, monitor and all.
