Netscape Messenger is part of of Netscape Communicator Web Browser package.

Netscape Communicator = Web Browser, Messenger E-Mail and News Client.

This guide will walk you through the setup and instructions for configuring Netscape Messenger.

I. INITIAL SETUP

  1. Netscape Messenger can be started in three different fashions :
    • Launching Netscape Web, clicking on 'Communicator' and then 'Messenger'.
    • Launching Netscape Web, and typing 'Control-2' on your keyboard.
    • Using an Icon in your hotlinks by your start button, or in 'Start' | 'Programs' | 'Netscape Communicator' | 'Netscape Messenger'.
  2. If this is your first time running Messenger, it might start up an account wizard. Please select 'Cancel' if this occurs.
  3. On the pull-down menu, click on 'Edit'.
  4. Select 'Preferences'.

II. SETTING UP YOUR COMPANY_SHORT ACCOUNT

  1. In the Preferences window, you have catagories on the left, and their settings on the right.
  2. Open up the catagories by clicking on the + symbol or double clicking the name.
  3. Click on the sub-topic 'Identity'.
    • Under 'Your name', enter your full name, or preferred display name (Example : Bob Smith).
    • Under 'Email address' enter your complete email address (Example : bob@COMPANY_DOMAIN).
    • Under 'Reply-to address' enter your complete email address again.
  4. Click on the catagory 'Mail Servers'.
    • On 'Incoming Mail Servers' click ADD and enter in the following information :
      • 'Server Name' - Enter mail server (Example : COMPANY_DOMAIN)
      • 'Server Type' - Select POP3 Server
      • 'User Name' - enter your login name, which is the prefix of your email address.
      • Make sure Remember Password is checked.
      • Make sure Check for mail every x minutes is checked, and set to 5 minutes.
      • Make sure Automatically download any new messages is checked.
      • In the Sub-Folder behind the General one you are on, make sure Leave messages on server is NOT checked.
    • Under 'Outgoing mail (SMTP) server' enter the server's name (Example : COMPANY_DOMAIN).
    • Under 'Outgoing mail server user name', enter your login name, which is the prefix of your email address (Example : Bob).
  5. OPTIONAL: Click on the catagory 'Messages'.
    • Under 'By default, forward messages:' select 'Quoted'
    • Make sure 'Spell check messages before sending' is checked.
  6. To finish, select 'OK' at the bottom of the window.

III. CHECKING MAIL

    Remember : Like all other internet mail programs, this mail program will ERROR if it can not reach the COMPANY_SHORT mail system because you have not established your internet connection first (Dialed in, etc.)
  1. On the toolbar, click on the 'Get Msg' button.
